Ellen and Alex: on-again, off-again?

I was looking through some sites and I came across an article from Curve magazine from 2001, and it refers to Ellen and Alex's relationship as on-again off-again, and talks about break-ups that they have had. I always thought that they were very much in love, and until she started dating Portia, I didn't know she had ever broken up with Alex at all. Is this new to anyone else?

I think they broke up like 2 or 3 times early on in their relationship.

Yea but that was very early on in their relationship it was said to be because of Ellens parting but I dont know. But apparently they got past that cause they ended up being together for 4 years.

this isn't news to me, every article I ever read said they had broken-up a few times before. I was very surprised when Ellen broke-up with Alex. I thought they were very much so in love but I guess one does not know unless they know each person.
