She joked about having a tattoo this week in a monologue - but recently she was also talking to a guest that got one with her dad.... Ellen said she didn't have one - didn't like pain was why...

I also read that she eats standing up, and wonders why most people don't change their names when they turn 18. Just curious, would anyone else change their names from their birth names? Personally, I wouldn't.

Looks like we could use a little homework on the Portia.
Here goes ... From menonly.com:

"why we like her?
A feisty woman who is in control of her life, Portia is the poster child for risk-takers who land on their feet. She's living proof that if you want big rewards, you have to take big risks.

why is she famous?
She played Nelle Porter, the ambitious lawyer and resident vixen on the FOX series, Ally McBeal.

Portia has ways to go before distinguishing herself as an actress with more to offer us than just a cool name. As is the case with many actresses who starred in red-hot series, keeping the momentum going once the show ends is often a daunting task, and may turn popular actors into one-hit wonders.

Her credentials notwithstanding -- she has appeared in countless independent duds, from The Invisibles to American Intellectuals -- there's no denying that Portia can dominate in feature films if she aims for more mainstream flicks. Otherwise, she may forever be known as "that girl from Ally."

Still, Portia has a lot going for her; her chameleon-like ability to go from a ditzy sorority girl in Scream 2 to young femme fatale Sirens is her best asset, proving that she is versatile and able to pull off any genre.

The best thing she has going for her, however, is her determined and confident demeanor. She knows what she wants, is in control, and is therefore not likely to be victimized by Hollywood manipulations.

Bonus points are awarded for her sleek, untamed look, both feminine and raw. Portia has that winning combination of innocence and sex appeal that, as most of her male admirers can surely attest to, make her appealing on so many levels.

personality & talent - 78

There's a certain poise that emanates from Portia; she has that grace and sophistication that contrasts well with her cutting edge style. One look at her and you immediately see a woman who is cool, calm and collected.

Casting agents and producers alike must have had the same reaction, and that's probably what landed Portia so many roles from the moment she stepped on American soil. Her strong personality is so dominant in her performances, that it all but eclipses her acting. And so far it has worked in her favor.

The only problem Portia has for the moment is getting people to take notice; her films have gone largely unnoticed, and her Ally role, though critically praised, was overshadowed by the show's star, Calista Flockhart.

But the fact that she's been relatively employed from the moment she arrived onto the scene in 1994 speaks volumes for her abilities as an actress and, as a result, you shouldn't underestimate her.

sexiness- 83

Saying that Portia resides in the upper echelon of sexy women will likely be met with agreement among most people. That's because Portia is a vixen; at least that's what she wants us to believe. Look at any one of her photos and you immediately see a wild child bumbling under her seemingly composed exterior.

She has that raw, animal magnetism that is most present in her photos, like a wild child trying to break free from her "girl-next-door" exterior.

Sexiness can take on many forms, and in Portia's case, it's that feeling of never knowing what we're going to get. Is she a sinner or a saint? We may never know, and that's half the fun.

accomplishments & fame - 74

Portia de Rossi is one of those names that, when heard for the first time, sticks to your brain for its sheer uniqueness. But as cool as that name is, it may be the only thing she's known for, aside from her romance with Ringo Starr's stepdaughter, Francesca Gregorini.

The problem is that her Ally role, as juicy as it may have been, will not resonate for much longer, especially since the show recently ended its five-year run. And as popular as Ally McBeal once was, it was no Seinfeld, so the cast -- especially supporting players like Portia -- can't ride the Ally wave forever.

And without the show's cult status, all Portia has is a repertoire filled with B-movies (appearing in Sirens, The Woman in the Moon, and Perfect Assassins) including a bit part in the horror sequel, Scream 2, opposite Neve Campbell.

Portia's best bet would be to concentrate on feature films, nabbing grittier roles, and steering away from campy sitcoms to avoid typecasting.

natural beauty - 77

There's nothing about Portia's façade that is particularly noteworthy. She has that Uma Thurman thing about her that gives her a "been there, done that" undertone.

For the record, though, she is far from unappealing. Her platinum blonde locks and sleek, almost 5'8" frame, together with her girlish smile, are sure to make men (and surely women) grin from ear to ear.

While it may be true that blondes have more fun, Portia should consider reverting back to her natural color (she's really a brunette) to take some of the attention away from her mane and give her an even more unique look.

personal style - 79

Deemed one of the Worst Dressed of 2000 by People magazine, it's safe to say that Portia's style is a little "out there." But while she hasn't received unanimous raves from the fashion police, give the lady some credit: she knows a thing or two about clothes.

For one thing, she knows how to maintain that delicate balance between looking chic without being too racy. She never shows off more skin than necessary -- unlike those who would wear nothing but saran wrap if they could -- and that alone deserves praise.

And, yes, she knows a thing or two about designer labels. Whether it's an awards show or just a night out on the town, Portia can be seen sporting the latest trends, from Valentino to Gucci.

Staying true to her free sprit, she also sports a well-concealed tattoo on her finger (a touch of rebellion is always nice).

She also knows how to travel in style; treating herself to a new BMW M5 following her debut on Ally McBeal, Portia has quickly become the classic Hollywood cover girl. It's only a matter of time before People puts her on the winning end of its list.

quote

"It was the most courageous thing I've ever done."
-Portia de Rossi, on changing her name

biography

Hailing from Melbourne, Australia, Portia -- whose real name is Amanda Rogers -- was born on January 31, 1973. One of two children, she was raised solely by her mother following her dad's death when she was only nine.

Realizing that life could be short and unexpected, Portia (who changed her name at age 15) decided to make "every moment count" and threw herself into a variety of projects, most notably modeling and TV commercials.

gearing up for fame

Although she seemed like a natural from the start, Portia had no interest in pursuing acting professionally. Instead she enrolled herself into the University of Melbourne with the hopes of becoming a lawyer (and getting A's in the process).

A year into her studies, Portia was approached by a casting director who had seen some of her commercials and thought she would be perfect for Sirens, a 1994 Australian comedy starring Hugh Grant. Portia eventually got the part of a nude model.

"It kind of turned my life upside down," is how Portia describes landing the part. Indeed, it would soon alter her game plan forever.

While on a 1995 trip to Denver -- to attend the Telluride Film Festival -- Portia, on impulse, decided to switch her return ticket from Sydney to Los Angeles in the hopes of jumpstarting her newly discovered passion. Though she lived a hand-to-mouth existence at first, she eventually settled in with her new boyfriend, documentary filmmaker Mel Metcalfe, and things soon took off.

courting the chance of a lifetime

She appeared in several small pictures, including The Invisibles, The Woman in the Moon, American Intellectuals, and Perfect Assassins, in addition to her small roles on Scream 2 and Stigmata.

But it was in 1998 that Portia got her big break. Having remembered her from Mixed Nuts, a 1996 pilot, David E. Kelley, creator of Ally McBeal, asked Portia to audition for the role of Nelle on the hit FOX series (the role had originally been offered to Vanessa Marcil, but she turned it down to do Beverly Hills, 90210).

For Portia, it was the role of a lifetime, having followed Ally religiously since the show's fall 1997 premiere. She won raves for her performances on Ally McBeal and even shared the 1999 SAG Award for "Best Ensemble in a Comedy" with her co-stars.

"She's very intelligent and that comes across in her acting," Kelley once remarked in singing Portia's praises.

Indeed, her fierce determination and general love of the art will surely carry her well into the latter years of her career.

gentlemen prefer blondes?

She was last seen in the small film Who Is Cletis Tout?, starring Christian Slater and Tim Allen, and the TV movie, The Glow. Her next project will be playing JFK JR's wife Carolyn Bessette Kennedy in the made-for-TV movie based on his life, slated to air next winter on TBS.

Portia has since split up with Metcalfe and is supposedly engaged to Ringo Starr's stepdaughter and singer/songwriter, Francesca Gregorini "

Just curious, would anyone else change their names from their birth names? Personally, I wouldn't.
In order to symbolically indicate some important change in their lives, in themselves or for their future, people are known to change something important about themselves. For instance some cut/dye their hair, get a tattoo, or some even change their names.

I changed my name at 18/19. It was a gradual process as someone just started calling me by that name and others followed. Then half of my friends were confused when I answered the phone by either my old name or my new name.
At a certain point I got tired of that and decided I wanted to adopt the new name completely. Although I didn't dislike my old name, the new name felt good. It somehow suited me. And, what's more, it gave me a real feel of starting a new life at the time. My old one also reminding me of some bad stuff of the past. It also indicated that I was taking control of my own life from now on.
Taking on the new name wasn't easy for all my friends. Some just thought it was stupid and refused to use the new one for a long time. In that, one might indeed say wanting to stick with it was kind of a daring thing to do. After a few years the most reluctant were ok with it as well though.
Now, 26 years later, there is nobody around me who would not consider it my real name anymore.
Although I don't really give my name much thought anymore (unless someone asks about it), I still do think it was something beautiful I have done for myself at the time.

I personally wouldn't change my name. Summer. But if my can you just imagine saying, "Oh My God!! Ellen is dating Amanda Brown!!" Now that I think about it, she looks like an Amanda Brown. But for some reason Portia de Rossi fits also. Thats probably cuz it sounds like fake.

I don't think i'd ever change my name, but i have a few reasons to:

1. It's so easily mispronounced. Natashia E. Mower. Yes, there's an i in there and the last name rhymes with power.
2. Teachers randomly call me Natalie, so i might as well change my name to that.
3. People always think im from Russia because of my first name. I don't have anything against Russia, i'm just not from there.
4. Take a look at that middle name. Are you kidding me? Who gives their kid a letter for a middle name? People never believe that that's my middle name, so i've started coming up with wierd words that start with E and telling people that's my middle name to freak em out. (example: embalm). Help me think of some others, this'll be fun.

Wow, even talking about my name was too much work, screw it, i'm changing my name next year.
