Ipod and hp pavilion help

Hello everyone i would like to convert videos and if possible movies to my ipod.How may i do that please. :)

I have a hp pavilion which i record movies form the tele.How do i get rid of the commercials and how can i also convert them to a smaller size to fit on dvds and on my ipod. :?:

What format are the videos in?
