Unfortunately, the US is way behind us here in the UK regarding gays.... Look at what happened when Ellen 'came out' on "Ellen". Although it is better, I think the US still has this problem. I have a friend in LA who is gay and she can't let her workmates know!!!! So. hopefully Ellen will be careful and not do it too much and what happened to "Ellen" doesn't happen to TEDS.
I hope she keeps it as a "Family" show where "everyone", gay or straight can enjoy her and her show.

I don't mind her mentioning Portia... Everyone can talk about their spouses/partners, why can't she? And its not like its weird stuff, shes just mentioned "we" or "Portia".. big deal... Keep on Ellen, we love it!:)

Like we all don't know she's gay anyway! Or that she has a wife/girlfriend...whatever! Everyone knows she's gay, everyone knows she with Portia, so it should come as no surprise that she says her name or says "we", which, by the way, she's been doing ever since the beginning of TEDS I think, even when she was with Alex. Everyone knows what she means!!! I'm proud of her and I enjoy it!
I just hope this is a nasty rumor too and I hope the ratings really have gone up 17%! Go Ellen!!!

I don't find that suprising cause Ellen's target audience is usually home when her show is on and then combine that with the popularity of DVRs most people can just watch the show instead of listening to the audio on radio

I find it sad that Jerry Springer is way above Ellen in ratings. That's seriously disturbing, people prefer watching crazy people fight to a funny show.

I highly doubt her ratings are dropping. I think this is a great season and like it was mentioned before, her ratings were up, not down...
i personally think she should stop talking about portia. very few people talk about their spouses etc etc ... and ellen already got messed up once before because of all of it. i think she is starting to push a little to much. yes, everyone excepts it now and she is seen all over with portia -- but no need at all to push it out there on everyone. don't get carried away ellen.
does anyone know what happenned to DJ JOHNNY? just curious.

If she remains as funny as ever and accomplish her vision of bringing joy and laughter to everyone for that 1 hour per day then im sure her ratings will not drop.
However I do worry about her international fan base. In my country, her show is shown 3 months later than in the US and many segments where she mentioned Portia in the last season was cut, especially the monologue about missing Portia's birthday. As you can see there are places in the world where acceptance of the gay lifestyle is still not as open. This is bad news especially when she mentions Portia in most of the shows in season 5. Many TV stations might decide not to show TEDS.
Since Ellen has hosted the Oscar and she is now more well known worldwide, I hope she does not forget about her increasing international fans when doing her show. As she gets more topical this season I hope she keeps in view that many viewers are not as up-to-date with what is happening in the US.
I personally don't see Ellen pushing the envelope all the way with regards to mentioning Portia on the show. She has learnt her lesson and has a great team behind her to ensure history will not repeat itself. I hope season 5 will be a blast and many more accolades will come in Ellen's way.
Whao..I think I should shut up now and go sleep...
Good luck Ellen, we love you.

alot of the articles some of you have posted are from the beggining of the season. I highly doubt Ellens ratings are going down, especially with KellyDs article. I also dont think that Ellen talking about Portia has anything to do with anything. If someone changes the channel because Ellen mentions Portias name for a millasecond, then they need therapy. And to the people who say the USA is behind or whatever about being gay. You are so right. My opinion, politics and religion have screwed up this country. Plus the media here is ridiculous!! I hope things change after this next election or I might find myself moving north to Canada.

Talk Shows Hold Steady For Holidays by Wayne Friedman, Thursday, Dec 27, 2007 8:00 AM ET SYNDICATION PROGRAMS SHOWED PLENTY OF resilience going into the holiday season. Many daytime talk shows maintained or improved their ratings performance for the season for the week ending December 16--especially two high-profile shows: Warner Bros.' "Ellen DeGeneres" and CBS Television Distribution's "Rachael Ray." "Ellen" went to the season high, improving 9% to a Nielsen Media Research 2.4 live-plus-same-day rating. "Ray" pointed up 5% to a 2.1, tying its best season number. NBC Universal's "Jerry "Springer" also grew 8% to a 1.4 rating.
Other talkers stayed about the same level: NBC's "Maury" at a 1.9; CBS' "Montel Williams" at a 1.5; NBC's "Martha" at a 1.2.
On the losing end were the top two talk shows: CBS' "Oprah Winfrey" at a 5.2 rating, down 5%, and CBS' "Dr. Phil" at a 4.5--a 6% drop. Morning talkers: Disney-ABC's "Live with Regis and Kelly" lost 3% to a 3.1. Warner Bros.' "Tyra Banks" dropped 8% to a 1.1.
Rookie shows did well to stay in the game: Warner Bros.' magazine "TMZ" held at a 2.0 rating. NBC's "The Steve Wilkos Show" was flat at a 0.9, while Program Partners' "Merv Griffin's Crosswords" grew 13% to get to 0.9.
All major syndicated game shows improved: CBS' "Wheel of Fortune" climbed 3% to an 8.1. CBS' "Jeopardy!" went up 2% to a 6.6. Disney-ABC's "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire" hit a 3.2, after a 7% gain. Debmar-Mercury's "Family Feud" grew 6% to a 1.9.
This season's new off-network sitcoms continued their neck-and-neck race: Warner Bros.' "Two and a Half Men" was unchanged at a 4.9, which led all sitcoms. Twentieth Television's "Family Guy" grew 7% to a season-high 4.8.

Latest update in Broadcasting & Cable...Jan. 4, 2008
**********************
"In the November sweeps, results of which just became available, only two talk shows were up in their time periods year to year. Ellen gained 4% in households and 12% among women 25-54, while Rachael Ray grew 9% in households and 14% among women 25-54."
"Disney-ABC’s Live with Regis and Kelly (http://www.broadcastingcable.com/flashVideo/element_id/2140079044/taxid/31764.html), rarely in reruns, climbed 3% to a 3.2, tying its season-high. Warner Bros.’ Ellen DeGeneres (http://www.broadcastingcable.com/article/CA6500902.html), coming off a season -high in the prior week, dipped 4% to a 2.3. CBS’ Rachael Ray (http://www.broadcastingcable.com/article/CA6513419.html) remained at its season-high 2.1 for the second straight week. Ray got a boost from an appearance by Robin McGraw, Dr. Phil’s wife, who appeared on the Dec. 17 episode with her holiday cookie recipes, sending ratings up 14% from the prior week to a 2.4."
*********************
Before anybody gets excited that Ellen's rating dropped by 4% last week, just remember that the previous week was the last of the 12 Days of Giveaways which boosted her ratings and last week's shows were reruns which would naturally explain the drop. The important ratings to keep in mind are the November sweeps which were up.

I'm glad that her writers will be returning soon, but it just goes to show you how talented Ellen is. I wonder how the night time shows are doing, ratings wise, since the host have returned.

Ellen has done a great job holding the show together and improving the ratings while the writers have been on strike. Maybe we should change the title of this thread to just "Ellen's Ratings"...and try to put a more positive spin on it.

It's great she's doing good in the ratings, but I agree, can we change the name of this thread to just Ellen's Ratings? Everytime I see this thread I get worried too, thinking her ratings have dropped!!!

Syndication Ratings: Sweeps Good for Talkers
Five Talk Shows Tie Season Highs
Five talkers -- Warner Bros.’ Ellen DeGeneres, CBS’ Rachael Ray, NBC Universal’s Maury, WB’s Tyra Banks and NBCU’s Jerry Springer -- tied their season highs in the third full week of the February sweeps, while CBS’ The Oprah Winfrey Show reasserted its dominance at the top of the talk list in the week ending Feb. 24.
Oprah improved 5% to hit a 6.3 live-plus-same-day household rating, according to Nielsen Media Research. CBS’ Dr. Phil remained a strong second but dipped 2% to a 5.0. Disney-ABC’s Live with Regis and Kelly dropped 3% to 3.0.
Ellen earned 9% to a 2.5, getting help from auto-racing star Danica Patrick (http://www.broadcastingcable.com/article/CA6528507.html), who appeared on the show Feb. 22, shooting the ratings up 17% to a 2.7.
CBS’ Rachael Ray rose 5% to a 2.3, and it was the only talk show to gain on the year, also rising 5%. Ray got an assist from movie star Dennis Quaid, who showed up to lend a hand with Ray’s Oscar-party recipes, lifting the ratings 14% to a 2.5.

Thanks for all the info on Ellen's ratings over there in the US.
Unfortunately like Germany, Ellen is not very well known over here in the UK, but I know that us Ellen fans watch her show every day, and we all bombarded Five Life about the show when we finally got it over here.
Like the person from Germany I have mentioned Ellen several times to people, and also got that "Oh. that gay woman".. My reply is "What has that got to do with her comedy". And believe it or not, I have a few gay friends, and some of them have never heard of Ellen. They have now of course...:)
Hopefully now the show is on over here, her popularity will increase.

Has anyone ever seen it discussed in any of the trade magazines or anywhere else as to why Ellen's ratings aren't higher? Seeing how popular see is and how many Emmy's she has, I would think the ratings would be through the roof. Maybe she isn't on in as many of the markets as Dr. Phil and some of them. I know on our local station, it doesn't get much publicity.

I was under the impression that she competes with Oprah in a lot of markets.
Oprah used to get a lot of Emmy's but decided to not compete anymore, so that has probably affected Ellen's recognition in that area as well as other talk shows being recognized. Personally I don't care for Oprah's show, but obviously a lot of people do.

I don't like Oprah too. She seems to be always cutting off her guests when interviewing them and she breaks for commercials every 5 seconds.

Oprah is all about "Oprah." I don't think she was so bad when she first started out, but now her ego has completely taken over. I just don't understand the fascination about her, except that she has gotten so powerful that celebrities are afraid to cross her.
When you watch Ellen, you can tell she is really listening to the guests (no matter how famous they are) and really cares about them. There is no comparison as to who is the better host.

One of the big differences, I think, between Ellen’s show and the other talk-shows, is that the guest, no matter who they are or how big they are, they truly seem to want to be there, they really care about Ellen. When they’re on other talk-show most of them are like:” I need to do this to promote my current project”, but on Ellen, they look like they are going to chit-chat with their best friend. They seem to really Love her and treasure that 5-10 minutes they are on her show, I can’t remember seeing a guest (not that I’ve seem all of them, since the show doesn’t air here, I just can talk for the ones I see on the net) that wasn’t relaxed and enjoying talking to her.
And that can only be attributing to Ellen’s friendly and spontaneous personality.

Go Ellen!!!
Agree, totally!
Everyone knew she was Gay BEFORE TEDS. The people who were "bothered" by this...don't watch anyway, so.....
Most people (friends, co-workers, etc) describe her as a sweet, funny, caring, person. Her being Gay really doesn't seem to be an issue.
OR, maybe I'm simply surrounded by intellegent, open-minded, caring people.:)
ALSO: Several of these people are considered as "Holy-Rollers". I'm welcomed in their homes, have had dinner together/ had a drink together. I've been asked to watch their kids....They have never tried to "rescue" me. They Love me - and I love Them back!
