As of right now, I am going to be attending Ellen's Really Big Show in Vegas! :D
I just got tickets, have free plane tickets from airline mishaps, and still working on the rest of the details.
(I'm exhausted... it poured in nyc today, and now i'm Trying to fall asleep after returning back home. I work at 1030 and it's 348. :p)
I don't know if there is a thread about this already or not. If so, sorry. I haven't seen one yet.
HOPEFULLY this will all work out! :)

too tired to type anything else,

When Meike talked to Ellen she told her that TEDS coundn't be seen in Germany and she said they had to work on that! Ellen was surprised.

Don't forget Ellen is going to be on the TBS special in Vegas too for the comedians... I forgot the name of the special but I know there is a thread started on it somewhere.

I think I posted that a while back, but the company I was working for was teetering on the brink of financial collapse for a while and I did a little web page of Piggy to cheer up myself and a couple of coworkers.

http://www.thepiggyliberationfront.com

Piggy is just so cute and knows how to love. How can you look at that face and not feel better. :)

One of the salesmen at the company found a couple of piggies in his stuff and gave one to my boss and the other one to a sales analyst. They are fraternal twins, a boy and a girl, my avatar is the boy one. Sadly I have not seen him since the company went out of business. I have tried to get my boss to send a high quality picture of him, I took the ones I have using a web cam. The analyst was let go before the company finally closed.
His sister is the one that in most of the pictures is not living in a sock.

Basically, it sounds like it is a variety show with music guests and comedians. And Ellen is going to make an appearance too! I think the comedy festival has been going on all week and Ellen will make an appearance the last day, and then they will edit it all together and cram it into a 1 1/2 hour show.

If any of you are familiar with the CMA Festival, better known as Fan Fair, it is an anual country music festival that goes on for four days in Nashville every year in June, and people can get autographs from some of the singers, and at night they have the concerts...in the last two years they started showing it on tv sometime in August...what they do is they take mostly some of the performances from the concert parts of the festival and put them together to make a 1 hour program for people to watch. I got to see it all live in person for 7 years and it was fun, but it started to fade away for me when no big stars started showing up to sign autographs anymore!

But basically, I think this is kinda what they're doing with Ellen's Really Big Show...it's a week-long comedy event I think and then they're going to have musical guests on and Ellen's going to be there, and they'll edit it for a special on TBS. Hope this cleared some things up!

They have three other shows that are part of a comedy festival.

The Comedy Festival (http://www.tbs.com/shows/thecomedyfestival/0,,88025,00.html)

I'm not sure how involved Ellen is in these. I had originally planed to record them, but they don't sound like Ellen has a big involvement and the shows did not sound that appealing to me.

Article about the Vegas show - http://blogs.lasvegasmagazine.com/VegasLuxeLife/ellen-lands-big-stars-for-big-show/.

A little excerpt from the article:

Ellen instructed Comedy Festival organizers to scrap plans for a media-tent that was to be set up tonight so she and her guests could do photos and interviews.
“She just didn’t want to be grilled about working on her TV show while the Writers Guild strike is ongoing—or about her suddenly cancellation to broadcast a week of shows from New York where the Writers Guild planned to picket the theater there. She also wanted to avoid getting into the recent dog adoption controversy that was emotionally upsetting to her, I was told.

I don't blame Ellen for not wanting to meet with the media. They never cared about what she thought before, so why give them anything now. She doesn't need anymore of their negative publicity.

They where helping her with her lines. Andy is a lot thinner then he looks as well. Just amazing it was!! Hopefully Monday you will see me, they taped me a few times going crazy, yelling and clapping...I am so excited still...

Sounds like you had a great experience! :D Can't wait to see the show

Ok So last night was the taping of Ellen's really big show, don't think I had crappy tickets, hell no, I don't roll like that. 4th row baby, it was so much fun! I Got tons of pictures. I am not on the website as much as I should be, that being said don't want to fumble through posting pics. I need someone to contact me and I will send you the pics via email then you can turn around and post them on here. There are a lot of pictures that are blurry because she wouldn't stop moving but others that are just perfect! Ah what a night, I had so much fun and can't wait to see her again.

PS She is a lot thinner then she looks on TV.

i sent you a PM :D

Who are Blue Collar Team?

Blue collar is an expression that means that someone is a working class person. White collar is someone that works in an office.

I think this is a reference to the sort of humor, the show for Saturday is called "Blue Collar Comedy:The Next Generation" according to my DVR.

Ahh, okay thanks :) I thought Blue Collar was actually, like, a group or something.. I feel stupid sometimes :o Guess I just have to get used to that learning the grammar of a language doesn't always help, you have to actually live in an englishspeaking (or whatever language it is that you're trying to improve) country for a while to learn all the other stuff too. If you understand what I mean.

Even being in one country that primarily uses a language does not always help...

To use the over used expression about the US and the UK, two peoples divided by a common language. :uglyconf:

Well, at least I have new pics to come home to! I just rushed home from school just in time to watch Ellen and the mayor is on announcing the new police chief...I don't know why they have to show it live! The Noon news comes on at 12:00! Why couldn't they just tape it and show it an hour later? That's why they have the news at 6am, 12 noon, 5pm, 6pm, and 10pm!!

This sucks!! They're just standing up there bull****ing!! Like it was a big surprise anyway, the new polic chief is the sherriff that has been sherriff for the last million years in our city! Who cares? Not me! I want to see Ellen!!

HOW DAAAARE THEY!!!!

Sorry, I just had to vent, get that out there! I'll shut up now and go find some new pics to copy to discs!!!

I'm so proud of her too! And she looked beautiful in this picture and all the pictures from the show! Does she look great these days or is it just me? I mean, despite what has been going on for about the last month, she looks better than she has ever looked! I swear that woman gets better with age! I love her hair the last few weeks, her clothes, everything! She looks great as always, but I think she's looking better as she gets older...she doesn't look like she's getting older though...she looks like she's getting more beautiful by the day!

And she looks like she's lost weight in the last few weeks too! I know, it's one of those compliments she says is a backhanded compliment...and no, I didn't think she looked fat before, as she thinks people think! But she looks like she has slimmed down a bit these last few weeks!! She always looks great no matter what though!

And whoever referred to her outfit as a present you could unwrap...I would love to unwrap that present...LOL!!! Just think...Portia DOES get to unwrap that present:p:D!

It still says tbs...but if u leave it on that channel for a few mins..the bottom right hand corner it will say peachtree tv...its not the same as tbs..

Found the following on the internet:
In late June 2007, Turner Broadcasting announced that WTBS would change its callsign and become WPCH-TV, under the branding Peachtree TV. According to Turner, the new channel 17 will offer sitcoms and movies geared toward an Atlanta-area audience, substantially if not entirely separate from the satellite feed. The new station will, in the future, also broadcast 45 Atlanta Braves baseball games in 2008. The change is scheduled to take place on October 1. As a result, the channel 17 change will allow Atlanta cable and satellite television viewers to receive, for the first time, the national TBS feed in its entirety.[2]

In Canada, most cable and satellite companies carried WTBS's local Atlanta signal instead of the national TBS channel. Following the change, Canadian systems have currently chosen to keep Peachtree TV.

In other words we are getting the Atlanta version of TBS instead of the national US version. So as long as the Atlanta TBS station (or Peachtree TV) is carrying Ellen's Big Show, we should get it. The Toronto Star TV Guide is listing the show on channel 47 at 9 pm on Monday so here's hoping we get it.

Interview with Ellen on internet today....

http://www.examiner.com/a-1056959~Ellen_has_a__Really_Big_Show__despite_the_ writer_s_strike.html

Ellen has a ‘Really Big Show’ despite the writer’s strike

http://www.examiner.com/images/newsroom/small/small_55F5D913-3048-2F0A-AA94E73B828D8522.jpg (javascript:popUpWinPP('ShowPhoto.cfm?filename=/images/newsroom/55F5D913-3048-2F0A-AA94E73B828D8522.jpg&caption=Ellen DeGeneres filmed a variety show in Las Vegas last week.','pp'))
(Courtesy photo)
Ellen DeGeneres filmed a variety show in Las Vegas last week.

Nov 19, 2007 6:00 AM (4 hrs ago) by Greg Archer (http://www.examiner.com/Topic-By_Greg_Archer.html), The Examiner
SAN FRANCISCO (Map (http://www.examiner.com/map.cfm?latlong=37.7753 -122.4186&dateline=SAN FRANCISCO), News (http://www.examiner.com/Dateline-SAN%20FRANCISCO.html)) - She can’t write a word about it — yet — but Ellen DeGeneres finds the Hollywood writers’ strike “heartbreaking.”
“I love my writers and we are a family and it’s a really hard thing to deal with,” DeGeneres says, referring to those involved behind the scenes of her Emmy-winning syndicated daytime talk show.
“I am kind of caught in the middle, because I am a host and I have a staff of 130 staff members that are depending on me for a paycheck every week, so it’s hard.”
Things don’t seem to be softening either.

The strike is about to enter its third week and a recent cancellation of an upcoming New York show generated questionable buzz. DeGeneres, who is also a member of the Writer’s Guild, says she’s “winging it” on the show to honor her contract as host.
Still, there may be a comedic light at the end of this political tunnel.
Fans craving original content can find it at 9 tonight (and repeating at 10:30 p.m.) on TBS with “Ellen’s Really Big Show.” Penned long before the strike and filmed last week at the HBO and AEG Live’s Comedy Festival in Las Vegas, the special is a clever throwback to variety shows of yore. Barry Manilow, Lyle Lovett, Wayne Newton, Sheryl Crow, and comics Rhys Darby and Sean Cullen hit the stage. Tossed into the “Really Big” mix are an African children’s choir, a posse of wild acrobats and a Fab Four tribute band, among others.
“I grew up watching ‘The Carol Burnett Show’ and ‘The Sonny and Cher Show’ and The Smothers Brothers,” DeGeneres says. “I loved Woody Allen and seeing new comedians on ‘Ed Sullivan.’ It was a different kind of humor.”
It’s no joke. In fact, she’s candid about the current climate of comedy.
“I wish comedy [today] would be clever and insightful and not so mean-spirited at the expense of somebody else,” she says. “I don’t think it does anybody any good. And I think it just teaches kids that that’s what humor is; that’s how you get a laugh — by making fun of somebody else.”
She says she’s not sure how, exactly, modern-day humor turned so sour.
“It would be a good study that people should start working on because people get more and more mean-spirited as we go along,” she adds. “I think it’s a direct correlation of us caring less and less about each other as a whole. But these fires that we had in Southern California, where all of a sudden you have communities coming together and helping each other — that’s a beautiful thing, where we realize we all need each other.
“OK, now I am getting too heavy.”
Her own brand of humor works because “I think I am exactly who I am whether I am on stage or hosting my show. There’s nothing that I have to hide and there’s nothing that I worry about.”
She hopes the TBS stint brings variety specials back from the dead.
“I really think people are ready to see a variety show on prime time again,” she quips, “and I am going to go out on a limb and say … mullets — people are going to want to see mullets again.”

AnastasiaBeavrhausen

I just finshed watching it and it's starting again as I'm typing this! It was AWESOME!!! All the acts were great! And Ellen was her usual upbeat charming self! Just wish there was more of her!

My favorite parts were Ellen saying, "Just think of me as your gay cousin," and "I got my ass stuck in a garbage can once, but we don't have time for that story!" LOL!!! :D

I also loved Sheryl Crow's new song! I didn't understand most of what she was singing, but I still loved it! I would know had I been keeping up with her like I used to, but Ellen takes up all my time now!!! Loved the show though! I hope she continues to do more of them!!!! I thought the show was ok. Ellen was great, and I do wish there was more of her. I loved the first few acts, especially the magician, the acrobats from Japan, (I think that is where they were from) and the jump ropers. The show could have done without a few of the other acts such as Barry Manilow and the guy who was dressed in drag wasnt funny to me as well as the other guy who did sound effects. I didnt think they were funny. All in all, it was enjoyable and like I said I thought Ellen was fantastic but she did look a bit tired to me.(she looked to have dark circles and a hint of bags under her eyes)Did anybody else think that or is it just me? Our queen needs to get some R&R.

I love your avatar! LOL!!! I remember that episode very well!! I remember the original show got cut into because of bad weather, but they showed it s many more times after that on other episodes, and I fall out laughing every time I see it!! Great classic moment in TEDS history:p!

But poor Ellen:o!

I was in the hospital for 3 months so I missed a lot of last season, including that part, so I can't wait to see it tomorrow on the show... :) I know its a weird avatar, but I'm weird, in case you haven't noticed LOL.

Portia was not there, if she was, she wasn't seen on TV. The special was okay, I wish there was a little more Ellen though. Great acts, but nothing I haven't seen before...

I forgot to say my favorite part of the show was the African Childrens Choir... thats talent baby.:):):)

Long story... I'm ok... holidays are hard for me, the food sucked. I was on a liquid diet for about 2 months and lost 25 pounds, but I gained it back :(... but the food was SOOOOO bad. The Thanksgiving meal wasn't that bad though.:D

I totally agree with you. I was disappointed in the show also...it did not have the fun and pep she usually has with an audience. No real point to sending the three women to the tables. Too many oldies..Wayne Newton with too many face lifts, Barry Manilow who can't carry a tune anymore and Lyle Lovett's music was fine but a little old fashioned. The pace of the show was too slow...always love seeing Ellen no matter what venue!

I saw myself 3 times. It was so cool. The show was really good, inbetween the commericals were the best though. She would "ka" and someone yelled out "holla" and she did it back...it was so funny.

You get a half a shot of me during the impresionist...I am in the upper left hand corner in the black shirt. I wanted her to see my shirt but I was in the middle of the row so she didn't a good shot...It was my Ellen is my Homegirl T. You can kinda see it in that shot.

Hope to see El do many more of these...it was a blast!

Honestly, I was not enthused about the show. I love Ellen and I usually love everything she does, but this event did not capture her spirit at all. I know she doesn't enjoy doing stand-up anymore, she's said as much many times now, but it is her stand-up that caused many of us to fall in love with her in the first place. The show just seemed "flat" and it didn't flow well at all. Maybe it was more interesting for those that were actually in the audience. If the entire 1.5 hours had been filled with acts like the magician and the jump-ropers, it would have been more entertaining. I totally agree with ROL, Barry Manilow, the comedian, the sound effect dude, and Wayne Newton - all could have been eliminated.

Just my two cents...I still loved seeing Ellen! She did seem a bit tired though. I think she definitely needs a long vacation!

i think it was a great show ,
but ellen wasnt even a producer on most her things shes and executive producer ,i think they (tbs people) must have been very specific on what they wanted and ellen wasnt even listed as a writer , maybe thats more to do with the strike , but her names normally listed on credits more than once and she was only listed as the host.

personally i dont think she chose the acts apart from cheryl

but still very good show !!

Something to consider is that a variety show is meant to appeal to a lot of different people.
If you don't like one act, just wait a short time and something completely different will be shown.

From the posts I have seen, it sounds like it succeeded in appealing to different people through different acts.

I rather liked the fake Beatles and the quick change artists.
I remember when the Beatles music was considered so wild and now I hear one of their songs and it sounds so tame. :uglyconf:

The show may have suffered a little from the advertisements over promising a bit.

The vest? You've obviously never seen this woman's muscles!!! Now that's HOT! And about singing the song twice...Sheryl is a big perfectionist...kinda like Ellen, so I can totally understand why Ellen let her sing the song twice! :D

They look great together...in a best friend kind of way...oh who am I kidding, they're hot together...but I love Portia, and Sheryl is straight:rolleyes:, well, at least I think she is...there's always that picture of her licking Sarah McLachlan's arm that made me kinda wonder...LOL!!! But I love it when her and Ellen are together! Being a huge fan of Sheryl's, I think it's awesome that they are such good friends...they've done so much together too, which I think is awesome!

Her performance was the best act of the show last night, apart from Ellen of course! That song had kinda a funky cool groove to it...I liked it. I can see why they saved her for last...she was the biggest star there besides Ellen!!

I totally forgot about Mary J. Blige while I was watching the show, but now I'm reading your posts and I remember Ellen saying Mary was going to be on the show...I wonder what happened! Maybe she had to pull out at the last minute!

My six year old daughter and I are watching ellen's really big show and after a commercial, they cut to Lyle Lovett. When he was done, my daughter said "That isn't really ellen's kind of music is it?''

Hi!
I was wondering the same thing myself! I simply love Ellen, and have been a fan since day 1.
Anyway, the reviews/ratings on "Ellen's Really Big Show" seem mixed.

According to http://www.usatoday.com
"Not as funny. TBS' latest original comedy, Frank TV, opened decently with 2.9 million viewers Tuesday. Monday special Ellen's Really Big Show managed 1.5 million viewers, below Family Guy repeats usually in that time slot. "

http://www.usatoday.com/life/television/news/2007-11-27-nielsens-analysis_N.htm

Seemingly disappointing numbers - especially to the investors and shareholders of TBS. But according to the Chicago Tribune:

DeGeneres' 'Big Show' may go on
November 25, 2007
It's been a tough few weeks for Ellen DeGeneres.

First there was the problem with an adopted dog, which led to a tearful plea on her daytime talk show. Then came all the flak for continuing her show despite the Writers Guild strike, which led the usually genial DeGeneres to cancel a taping in New York when she heard writers planned to protest.

Now a bit of good news for DeGeneres: According to ratings released by TBS, "Ellen's Really Big Show" was seen in 1,153,000 households on Monday, which bodes well for a follow-up in 2008.

Ellen DeGeneres kicks off first day of Comedy Festival at Caesars
Posted November 20, 2008 excerpt:

"...Last year Ellen, 50, instructed Comedy Festival organizers to scrap plans for a media tent meet-and-greet for photos and interviews. It will be interesting to see if she goes ahead with it tonight as currently planned. Ellen isn’t overly press-friendly and probably doesn’t want to have to deal with California political questions about same-sex marriage or her wedding to actress Portia de Rossi."

DeGeneres' kickoff show to Comedy Festival bigger than ever
How do you follow a really big show? With an even bigger really big show, of course.

Think of it that way, and the title of Ellen DeGeneres' latest variety show isn't nearly as unwieldy.

The three-day festival will include shows by such performers as Jerry Seinfeld, Dane Cook, Cheech and Chong, Andrew "Dice" Clay and The Kids in the Hall.

DeGeneres' kickoff show will, like last year's edition -- called, naturally, "Ellen's Really Big Show" -- feature variety acts from around the globe. During a conference call with reporters last week, DeGeneres said she hadn't seen the acts, and that producers were even keeping videotapes of two of them away from her.

"My producers wanted to surprise me with two of them, just because they want to see my reactions," she said.

"I think it's going to be the same kind of excitement, the same kind of acts that you have never seen before," she said. "We brought in people from all over the world that are fascinating to watch, and I think most of you are going to just sit there and wonder how they even thought of this idea that would be a possibility as a talent."

DeGeneres said she approaches developing her own material for the variety show -- she has signed on for three more editions after this one -- in the same way as she does her own Emmy-winning talk show.

"You know, there really is no difference between Ellen the stand-up or Ellen the talk show host or Ellen, even, at home," she said.

Going back to her own stand-up days, "it's just kind of commenting on absurdities and human behavior," she said, "and so there (are) going to be lots of comments about Vegas, obviously, and lots of other things.

"But, you know," DeGeneres said, "it's not like I'm going to be topless or start cursing all of a sudden. It's pretty much the same."

Then, after pausing for a perfectly timed Ellenish beat, DeGeneres added: "Although, now that I mention it, maybe topless, that sounds kind of exciting."

DeGeneres said she doesn't miss the practical rigors of the stand-up circuit. "I don't miss the traveling and sleeping in a hotel every night. I mean, that touring got really old."

But, in retrospect, there were signs even back then that a new career would someday be in the cards for DeGeneres.

"I used to tell the audience at the end of the show when I (did) a question and answer, I said, 'Someday, I am going to make you come to me, and I'm not going to come to you anymore,' " she said. "And, now, they do come to me.

"So I get to do stand-up every single day. I still get that live energy exchanged between the audience and myself. I still get to say the things I want to say and comment on."

DeGeneres said she hopes to catch some of the other festival events this weekend. And when she isn't performing or showgoing?

"Well, the buffet, you know?" she said. "Obviously. I don't know how much it is, but it's still a deal isn't it? I mean, I'm a vegan, so I will just have salad, but that's still a bargain.

"And, I'm going to gamble, that's what I'm going to do. I'm going to gamble, and if there are clothing optional pools there ... " DeGeneres said, letting the thought trail off.

Actually, a few laughs couldn't hurt these days, what with the state of the economy and all. A good laugh is a great thing anytime, DeGeneres said, noting that she signed on to the specials "before the economy was falling apart."

But, she added, "hopefully, there will be people out there winning

I definitely need to find a better paid job :(

Edited: Wow, those rides at the Stratosphere are insane, my friends 'forced' me to go on the coaster and the Big shot, but I couldn't face the X-Scream, that was too much :p

By Alex Dobuzinskis

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Three top U.S. comedians next week will bring variety shows to television and one, Rosie O'Donnell, believes the format could stage a comeback amid the slumping economy if families start gathering around TVs for cheap entertainment.

Specials from O'Donnell, Ellen DeGeneres and Stephen Colbert, are each scheduled as one-time events, but if successful they highlight what could be a return to a program format largely absent from U.S. TV for more than 20 years.

"Rosie Live," features Broadway-style singing and dancing from stars such as Gloria Estefan and Harry Connick Jr. O'Donnell and NBC, which airs the show November 26, said it could return as a regularly appearing program.

"The timing is right, I think the economy has made it so people are staying home more and sadly unable to go out," said O'Donnell, 46. "One hour to get around the TV with everyone in your family and laugh, that to me I think is needed now."

For her part, DeGeneres will share the stage of "Ellen's Even Bigger Really Big Show" on November 29 with a brother and sister pole-dancing team, a Dutch magician and performers from Spain, Germany and other countries.

DeGeneres, 50, who already has a daytime talk show, described herself as a fan of old-time variety shows.

"It's something that I've always loved," she told Reuters. "When I was growing up, it's the kind of thing I watched on television all the time and wanted to bring back. It's fun."

"A Colbert Christmas," which lands on cable channel Comedy Central on November23, takes a satirical approach to typical Christmas TV specials with comedy sketches and singers like country star Willie Nelson and rocker Elvis Costello.

ANYTHING GOES

Combining musical acts and sketch comedy with an earnest, anything-goes format, variety programs such as "The Carol Burnett Show" and "The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour" were a staple of nighttime U.S. TV in the 1960s and 1970s.

But they fell out of favor in the 1980s, as TV channels proliferated and audiences shifted to dramas and comedies.

Variety programs remain popular in many parts of the world, from "Eat Bulaga!" in the Philippines to "Sabado Gigante" in Latin America. But current-day U.S. audiences are accustomed to reality TV. The popular "Saturday Night Live," which was launched in the 1970s, retains vestiges of old-time variety.

Larry Auerbach, who worked as a talent agent for 47 years and is associate dean at the school of cinematic arts at the University of Southern California, said he would like to see the variety show return, but he doubts it can happen.

"Maybe some day it might come back, but I think it's a different time today," Auerbach said. "People, if they're old enough to remember anything, will consider it old fashioned."

But Craig Plestis, NBC executive vice president of alternative programing, said his network's "America's Got Talent," which combines reality TV and the variety format, has proven popular. Continued...
