Gov. Schwarzeneggar vetoes marriage equality bill - again
October 15, 2007
Chris Johnson (http://www.hrc.org/about_us/2636.htm)
California governor Arnold Schwarzeneggar again vetoed a bill on Friday to green light marriage equality (http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/state/20071012-1903-ca-gaymarriage.html) in the state. Authored by openly gay Assemblyman Mark Leno (http://democrats.assembly.ca.gov/members/a13/default.htm) and sponsored by Equality California, the measure would have defined marriage as a union between two people, not just a man and a woman. After refusing to sign a similiar Leno marriage bill in 2005, Schwarzeneggar's second veto of a bill to afford same-sex couples the same rights and responsibilities as heterosexual married couples sends a loud message that he's determined to be on the wrong side of history when it comes to extending equal rights to gay Californians.
Joe Solmonese issued a statement today in response:
This is an incredible disappointment. The Governor’s decision to overrule the legislature, for the second time in two years, is nothing less than a decision to deny equality to same-sex couples and their families. Governor Schwarzenegger had the opportunity to ensure equality for all loving and committed couples in California. Instead, he chose to restrict basic fairness and to continue to relegate same-sex couples to the separate and unequal system of domestic partnerships. I am confident, however, that the Governor will not have the last word. I know that Equality California, and all Californians who believe in equality, will keep fighting until there is justice, until marriage equality is a reality in California.

That is shocking!! :eek::eek:
I actually find Mr Schwarzeneggar a bit of a hypocrit. He is a man who made his name in acting, he came from whatever country he came from, Austria i think, into America and was accepted and given the honour of being made a Governor. And he uses that not to show that people can be accepted anywhere for who they are and what they offer, but to deny equality to the very people who are just like him, actors, musicians, teachers, doctors, mothers, fathers, vets, whatever...! It sickens me!
I'd really love to see him on TEDS because i think Ellen would have a few choice, and justified, words for him!

As a straight Christian woman, I am all for gay rights and I find that horrible. Don't give up, hopefully it will get resolved and challenged. I feel bad for everyone involved.:(

i read somewhere that, when he was younger, he had a homosexual experience. of course he will deny it. why did the people in california voted for him??? but i also ask that same question about bush jr.
but it really sucks for the gay community in california.

Nobody should have the power to prevent someone else from sharing their life together. If you found a special someone you want to share your life with.....your going to share your life with them.
This is so maddening. :wallbash:
*rolling on top of a "soap box"*
The basic human rights of LIFE, LIBERTY AND THE PURSUIT OF HAPPYNESS should be available to ALL humans reguardless of where, how they live, regardless of who they live with.
AMEN
I really hope Borrak Obama get's elected for president.
My heart hurts. :(

Sadly its not just the State of California that has such ancient attitudes to the Gay community, theres many many more beside the USA.
Some countires have come a long long way in allowing same sex unions, be it by marriage or Civil Unions. same rights as hetreosexual couples, its past time the biased, narrow minded antics of the polticians in these countries was viewed from a different stance to what they themseleves take.
It saddens me a great deal when I hear of friends whom have conducted a ceremony to one another, because they are denied the rights to do otherwise, at the end of the day they have no paperwork when it is needed , like a married or Civil Unioned couple, so the rights others have is removed. The depth of the relationship can never ever be shown on paper, but so many rights that should be theirs, are denied them. Its wrong

Even Ireland have caught up, the Irish government are going to introduce legislation that would recognise same-sex unions. They debated it yesterday and it passed!

He may be an idiot to you, but he did step up and did his JOB during those California wildfires... much more than the governor of Louisiana did. I will give him credit for that.

I'm interested, what are the laws on same sex marrigaes and Civil Unions in Australia and Belgium? Are gay couples who are in a relationship there with a person from another country given support guidance and help if they choose to settle there?
Well as far as I know in Belgium gay marriage is fully legal, I don't know about Austria though, however I know for sure Spain approved gay marriages legislation last year (so yay for them).

Here in Belgium you've got both mariage and partnership contracts... I don't know for sure wha the diffrence is.... But generaly when you marry someone who's not from this country this person will automaticaly have the Belgium Nationality... as much as straight couples!!!!
Now there is a law (that might change soon... it was made to actualy evoid ppl getting married for citizenship), who says that married couples here in Belgium need to be married for at least 2 years before they are aloud to ask divorce!!! (this is as much for gay as for straight couples)

In Australia we have no rights regarding same sex relationships, not allowed to marry, no civil unions, no recognition of parter if hospitalised etc etc. No help is give to partners relocation, the relationship is not recognised. ans our governmet is openly discrimination one section of its citerzens. Thats good that the loop hole which is, I guess a way for people to gain citizenship easily in Belguim , to be closed.
Yea dks, you have reason to love Belguim, its great that it is legal.

For real?? I was led to believe it was legal !! Same sex Civil Unions, and partnership contracts but not marriages were right of passage like a hetrosexual marriage and de fato relationship, were accepted and legal in Aussie.Wow!. Like Jamielove I don't understand the latter one either.
