SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, California (Reuters) - A fierce storm swept through central and northern California on Friday, cutting power to more than 1 million homes and businesses, closing major roads and canceling flights at several airports.
The storm may dump as much as 6 to 8 feet of snow in the higher elevations of the Sierra Nevada, and up to 2 feet at Lake Tahoe, forecasters with the U.S. National Weather Service said.
Meanwhile, Southern California braced for possible flash floods and mudslides in areas that burned in the October wildfires. Total rainfall may amount to the most precipitation in three years after the driest year on record.
Big trucks were barred from San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge, where winds reached 55 miles per hour (90 kph), said officials with the state Office of Emergency Services.
The Richmond-San Rafael Bridge near San Francisco, which connects two of the state's major highways, was blocked after a big truck toppled and a stretch of the main road connecting northern California and Nevada was closed down.
There have been no reports of serious injuries or deaths, said Lupe Humphrey, spokeswoman for Emergency Services.
But she noted that the capital of Sacramento was "ghost-like" because many heeded warnings to stay home on Friday.
"We're still saying 'stay home'," said Humphrey. "Especially in the Sierras -- don't travel."
The popular ski resorts around Lake Tahoe could get more than 5 feet of snow, but many were closed on Friday due to high winds.
