View Full Version : How can I capture flv files on Vista?
Just upgraded from XP to Vista and don't know to capture the video clips off the Ellen site.
On XP I played a video clip on YouTube or the Ellen site and the flv file was stored in the Temporary Internet files folder. I simply copied these files and changed the names to .flv. On Vista I cannot find the flv files in the temporary internet files folder.
Does anyone know if and where they get stored on Vista?
If not, any ideas how to capture the video clips off the Ellen site? I have an alternative for YouTube
Thanks
DG

If you download Real Player it allows you to capture .flv files - but I think you have to use it with FireFox rather than Internet Explorer. The plug-in for FireFox is called 'the RealPlayer Browser Record Plugin 1.0' - which basically detects all recordable content on the browser. In regards to the question of where they are stored - with the alternative I have suggested - the storage location is completely up to you.

Thanks for the suggestion. I realize now that I should have mentioned that it is a work PC so I cannot download any software and we don't have firefox or real player :o

If you are using Internet Explorer and have access to the browser cache, you can sometimes find them there.
It is probably easiest to clear the browser cache before playing the video.

Thanks for the help. Yes I am using Internet Explorer but have not got used to the differences between XP and Vista yet. How would I look to check if I have access the Browser Cache on Vista?

I would think that the browser cache is the same in Internet Explorer 7 under Vista as it was with XP (I don't have Vista).
You need the Internet Options, which should be available in Internet Explorer's tools menu.
On the dialog box that opens, click on settings in the browsing history section.
On the dialog box that opens, click on view files.
This opens a window that shows files in the browser cache. This will include cookies and other things.
You should drag files to another location to open them to avoid a warning about opening them in the cache.
I am not sure if Vista's security features will impact doing this.
As always, take care to only open things that you feel are safe to open.
Click OK, Cancel, or Close to close the dialog boxes.
You can clear the browser cache by clicking on delete in the browser history section and then clicking on delete files in the dialog box that opens.
You will need to click yes to confirm the delete.

I use real player..its really fast and easy..whenever i watch a video theres an option for me to download it and it takes seconds for it download..its the fastest thing and easiest thing i have used to get videos :)
Thanks for your suggestions, tried them out I am now able to capture the videos again.. Hurrah! With no TEDS in the UK next season, I will be relying on these more and more.:)
For info: I discovered that Vista stores its video cache in a different way from XP so I can't at get them through the internet browser options on IE7. I did find a neat .exe file (videocacheview.exe) which finds them for me.
thanks again DG
