So what is everyone's story about that?

I was actually curious to know if you guys liked watching Ellen (the series) before you even go to know she was gay?

Did you sort of suspected she wasn't totally heterosexual?

Did you come out around the time she did?

Did it help you out through a tough time?

I gota say, i've just stared watching all the episodes and i find it brilliant, hilarious, entertaining, touching, sweet, and everything that's good television!!

It's a shame it got cut off for such a silly reason.
But thank God Ellen didn't let that keep her down!!!!!!!!

oups, late for class..... have a lovely day everyone!! :inlove:

Sadly, at the time her sitcom was on, i was obsessing over the spice girls or something like that. I've also just started watching the sitcom and i think it's hilarious. I actually just saw the Puppy Episode yesterday and it was....brilliant. I was laughing so hard one second and then crying and laughing at the same time the next. *sigh* Gotta love her. :-D

I love the show. Too bad it wasn't able to stay on the air cause look at will and grace! I looooove that show to. But that is about 2 gay guys. Why didn't her show make it? OH well. Wrong time I guess. I think that it would still be on the air if it was just started about 2 years after it did. I saw the puppy episode yesturday as well! I love it. I watch it everyday now on oxygen. It's hilarious!

We got it in NZ about 6 mths after it was filmed in the US. I do remember watching Ellen. I'm not sure how soon I started watching - would have been the 3rd or 4th season. I do remember watching all the episodes in the lead up to the puppy episodes

i watched it well before Ellen came out... and being in the UK, i didn't hear all the fuss about the coming out episode, and i never looked or anything, it was just a programme i liked to watch - so when the puppy episode first aired over here (at an unusual time of 11.40pm - can you believe it nowadays?! lol) i was muchos surprised! it was one of the best moments, my jaw literally just dropped!

i'll always remember watching that episode... ahhh... happy days... lol :D

How could you have missed the hype!!! or the innuendos on the show????

I knew it was coming before it was on. There was innuendo after innuendo on the show.

oh yeah - i knew that it was coming, i'm not that silly - but it was still just... well, it was the first of its kind, hence the hype! (which we didn't have over here - the programme was shoved on at odd times as a filler, no one had really heard of her - hence the missing of it!)

it was just amazing to see, it was still jaw-dropping even though i knew it was coming.. just made me so happy! i was surprised it was actually happening... i dunno... can't explain it.. i was young and she summed up all that i wanted to say...
i just remember it fondly... :)

Ellen was always prime time here - Tuesday nights at 7.30 I think

awww... no, we never had that luxury!

it was always cancelled over here and only put on, as i said, as a filler programme...

it was also sometimes put on in a non-chronological order... always helpful!

can't wait to have it again on dvd... well, an official one anyway! hehe!

OK laooo question - who are the women in your signature? I thought prior to getting the L Word that they might have been from that show - and the one on the left kinda looks like alice. But the other doesn't look like any of them.

So who are they?

First time I saw it, it was the puppy ep...I didn't know her at all and I have to admit if I saw the all ep (before the coming out part), it was because I thought "hummm, she's pretty (I use that word but it's not that word I'm thinking to... ), I like her....she's soooooo gay!"

I'm really excited, the episode where she comes out to her parents "hello muddah, hello faddah" :-), is coming on today. Actually, it's on in, like, 20 mins. Yay!

For me, her sexuality was never an issue. That said, I had a strong suspicion of her orientation, but it didn't matter in the least.

She had & still has a wonderful way of wandering off on tangents while telling her stories/jokes & has a marvellous sense of humour. Those qualities (& more) made her programme extremely enjoyable.

I totally watched it AND LOVED IT from when it was called These Friends of Mine. I had seen her do stand-up in the 80s and thought she was hilarious (still do). There are so many episodes that are pee-your-pants funny, but my favorite has to be "Making Whoopee." When she picks up that short guy because she wants to see if she can lift him, tears from laughter fall heavily.

I do think the Puppy Episode was one of the best written shows and there were several others. I didn't enjoy the show as much after she came out, but I think that was because the focus was on making sure everyone knew that she was GAY (intentional emphasis) every second of the show, instead of it being focused on Ellen and her sweet goofiness. It just seemed to miss the simple, everyday things that made it so funny to begin with. Since the higher-ups decided they were jumping ship after she came out, that had a lot to do with what went wrong - the executives were going to ensure the show got killed.

It's too bad no one on the executive level had as much guts as Ellen to stand up for the show.

Hey, I'm new.

I remember the first time they played the new episodes of Ellen on TV (I was about 15) and I heard that it is something to do with Ellen being gay, I refused to watch it.
I even refused to watch the adds for it or anything else to do with it because at the back of my mind I strated suspecting that I was gay but I firmly denied it. In fact I would not even admit the idea that it was possible for me to be gay, so there was absolutely no Ellen for me (at that time).

So now that I've sorted myself out straight (:-P no pun intended) five years later, I love watching the re-runs of Ellen and I have to say that in the beginning I was really surprised by how funny she is!
I really love watching it not just cause the main character's gay and it mirros me, therefore it helps me keep my sanity because otherwise I'd feel like a purple martian among all these "straight" people blah blah blah (although that is an important aspect of it) but because it really is very funny, unlike so many shows on TV these days.
There are exceptions of course. :P

So, yeah...

Wow edsinger, your opinions of the show then and now are exactly the same as mine, and the reasons behind them too.
Someone mentioned earlier that if she had come out a couple years later the show woudn't have been axed. I disagree. First off, her show had to come out when it did to set off a sequence of events that allowed Will and Grace to become such a hit.
Also, didn't she start another sitcom before TEDS, and it completely flopped? I wonder how a new sitcome starring Ellen would do now considering all her fame and popularity from TEDS.
I agree with what someone said earlier about not liking the show as much after she came out because every second of the show was devoted to her being GAY. There is a huge change in Ellen Morgan's character from before she came out and after. She just wasn't funny anymore. Even though I liked the issues the show tackled after she came out, it still lost touch with what made it a success in the first place. That is why America stopped watching it. The puppy episode had record viewership, but they dwindled after that. America was ready for gay Ellen, they just weren't ready for a serious gay Ellen. I think she knows that now. She does TEDS as a gay woman and everyone knows it, but doesn't make it the point of her show. She's back to her grass roots...comedy.
Does anyone agree or disagree? I'd like to hear other's opinions.

I'll take your word for it because honestly, I've only seen the last season, which is after she came out.
But now you make me want to see the earlier ones as well!

I guess I've seen every single episode of every single season. I was younger and I never suspected she'd be gay. Now, when I watch the short pieces I've downloaded, I still can't see the signes. The hid 'm well. I've always liked the show. And I'll always remember it. LOVE YA ELLEN!!!

When I first started watching Ellen, I did not know that she was gay. I just thought she was and is a great entertainer and I loved watching the show. Even when I found out she was gay, it did not bother me at all. And yes, now looking over the series again, there is tell tale signs mostly through season 4, but I think that was the idea of the studios leading up to her coming out in the "Puppy Episode".

If anyone is interested in the Puppy Episode, I copied it for a couple of people, who have not got back to me, so can let them have a copy free of charge, just pay the postage. I also have some of the episodes of Season 5 if they want as well.

These are for playing on the PC, and can let you have the DIVX player which you have to install on your PC to watch them. Still no cost only postage.

Only pleased to help Ellen fans out if I can.

If interested pm me and I will get in touch with you.

I also have some video clips from "Ellen" and photo CD of Ellen. PM me. No cost, just postage.

I just bought season 2 and when ever i get time i watch an episode or two. so far my favorite is when paige asks her to pretend to be a personal trainer for her boss. Ellen has to wear Paiges workout clothes which is a unitard with a thong over top of it. It is soooo hilarious when Ellen walks into the room and turns around for everyone to see the thong riding up her butt (very nice ass by the way) ANd she is picking the thong out of her but and walking around on her tiptoes. It is worth digging up the episode and watching it, one of Ellen's great physical comedy routines.

I never cared Ellen was gay. I only thought it was something when her and Anne went to the Oscars together for the first time, I sware every camera was on them.
