I remember so vivdly the first time I saw Portia in 1999...Nelle, everybody said she was supposed to be cold and heartless, but how could she be with Portia's smile? It was like everything was melting under it...she was precious I remember thinking "she's so gay...I hope" Funny that...
Now I feel old with all these memories

I was a big Ally fan too and I loved Portia's character! She was cold and icy and could be cruel at times, but Portia played her so beautifully, you always knew that there was a heart underneath it all, so you could never hate her! And her relationship with John was so sweet!!

Portia is so underrated as an actress, she usually plays these hard to love characters, yet she gives them a softness and vulnerability that makes you love them anyway

Vulnerable, like a fawn in the woods, but tough, like a fawn in the woods with a machine gun.

I haven't seen any Ally McBeal, might give it a try.

Ally was great, although very much of its time! But it was well written, well acted and had a quirky sense of humour which I always liked and most importantly it had Portia

That was a really tough time in Portia's life.

She didn't like her character getting involved with her boss almost immediately after arriving.

So true! I never understood why she never got so many roles, because she's such a great actress. Her characters usually are quite complicated, but she manages to make them so loveable even though they're not supposed to be

Yes that's very true, although of course we didn't know that at the time, but she has spoken so eloquently about it since. Ally was repeated here last Summer and I managed to catch some of Portia's episodes and again it's a testament to her acting skills that we would never have realised that she was so ill and really fighting for her life against anorexia and bulimia, it's really sad that she was so desperately unhappy at a time when she should have been enjoying being on such a hit show. I do remember when the show was on first time round thinking how thin all the women were on it and it was constantly in the press, especially about Calista Flockhart, that they were all too thin, it just shows that you never really know what is going on in a persons life away from the cameras.

Yeah, they were all so thin there. But I'd never think back then in 2000 that Portia had some kind of anorexia/bulemia problem. Though, I should admit, I didn't watch all 5 seasons then as they didn't show them all on TV, so I think I didn't see her at her worst. But she acted so well, I'm re-watching it now and really can't see all the fear and hate she was talking about in her book. It just shows us how amazing of an actress she is, I think.
